Will just have to find out how things turn out, but we are pretty sure, however not totally, that northwestern Nevada/Carson City area will be for us. It most definitely has to be better than living here, for us anyway.

Reno does have one of the biggest paying rodeos in America, along with a Legendary Rodeo Announcer, Bob Tallman. And, I know the rodeo stock contractor, and his family, that provides the stock for this 10-day rodeo. I worked for his dad a number of times at So California rodeos.
Reno's heyday of gaming passed many years ago with the invention of air conditioning. Las Vegas is now the gaming hotspot for Nevada. People still come here but nothing like the 30's, 40's and 50's saw. Between Sparks and Fernley is the largest business park in North America and a West coast shipping hub. Carson is a bit smaller but is also the gateway to Lake Tahoe so it has it's share of traffic. Minden Gardnerville is smaller and quieter but might be a bit harder for apartment dwellers. The regions economy is much more diverse than Southern Nevada. At least that's how it seems to me but I'm a California native so what do I know.

The OP may be on a fruitless search for something that only exists in the past in their memory. Times change, and so do people, and fashion.

Babyboomers2, It's good you have friends in Reno!
What areas up there do your friends think would be the best match for you? Friends who knows you and your wife in real life are probably a much better source of advice than any stranger on the Internet. That's especially true if your friends are involved with rodeo in the area. Maybe they also have some leads on apartments for you.

Mr Willy’s you are correct that Reno really diversified its economy which was good because gaming alone was no longer going to sustain us. I have been here 27 years and this is not a cowboy town as the OP seems to think. Reno has a ton of festivals downtown from spring through fall which also helps bring in tourism. In addition it has many warehouses and has tech companies. Reno has a great rodeo but it’s a once a year event.

I haven't followed along as much as others, but I know bb2 & his wife love rodeo. Has Ft. Worth, TX ever been suggested? I was in Ft. Worth, not a big rodeo fan, but that seems to be a good place for it, we went to a horse show & had a lot of fun, plus I was told there are rodeos & other events, especially in the downtown area, all the time. The COL must be lower, too.

Ft. Worth's 2023 population was 956K, while Reno is 278K and Carson City is 57K. Trying to stay away from big populated areas, like Ft Worth no matter the rodeo action or whatever. Anyway, my wife doesn't want to move to Texas and I fully agree with her. However, on our "Bucket List" we have a visit to Ft Worth, but don't know when.

Just a little FYI, this morning we done a donation to Nevada FFA for FFA Day 2024. Some of my high school classmates (1965-1968) in northeastern Indiana were involved in FFA as well as 4-H. We highly support FFA, as we do 4-H. Love seeing livestock at Fairs that are owned/shown by FFA Members as well as exhibits from 4-H members.

I've mentioned both FFA and 4-H to some locals here in Henderson and they had no idea what I was talking about.

Rosie, we don't know anyone in Reno. What I meant is, I know the Stock Contractor, who is from Marysville, CA, that supplies the stock for the Reno Rodeo. I worked for his family at rodeos in So California back in the 80's/90's.

Still, if your friend has been running stock for the Reno Rodeo for years, he must know something about the rodeo scene there. Perhaps he can put you in touch with a few locals who share your interest in rodeo. It wouldn't hurt to give your friend a call.

Saw this on YouTube this morning and thought of you.... "When the Rodeo is Over, Where Does the Cowboy Go?"

As always, I wish you all the best for your next move.

Rosie, I knew/worked for his dad and his dad is now deceased. Never had his dad's phone number. I'd just show up at a rodeo, show my membership/contestant card and go to work (for his dad). Only got $40 per rodeo. The son's name is Reno Rosser. When I worked for his dad, Reno wasn't even born yet. Cotton Rosser named his son, Reno, after the city, Reno. One of the biggest rodeos Cotton Rosser/Fly "U" Rodeo Company brought in stock for.
