7 of the top ten best places to retire are in PA. Probably due to no state tax on retirement income or 401k withdrawals, lower than average cost of living, and good healthcare within the state (UPMC, Penn Medicine, Geisinger). It has 4 seasons, so winters are cold, but low risk for extreme weather (droughts, wild fires, hurricanes, etc)

Of course these lists are always subjective, but it’s an interesting perspective.

LOL another listicle on best cities to retire in. NYC is#6 on this list. Another recent list had San Francisco at #1.

I'm not sure who these lists are aimed at, but I think they always try to sprinkle in some outrageous picks just to generate clicks & buzz.

I can see the reasoning. But then we considered a number of the same criteria when deciding where to move after retirement and we ended up here in PA.

Aren't a couple of the Pennsylvania places somewhat crimey for their size?

Congrats to PA, and some of those cities do sound attractive.

But how can in be that nowhere in their top 40 is even one place west of the Mississippi??

harrisburg makes number 1 (have they ever been there in the last 20 years?) and they say it is mostly younger people and getting younger so its good to retire there as a geezer why? They almost make up for it by listing local areas like camp hill, hershey and I think Etown? but really, you need to push into the bliss of carlisle...

The high crime rate keeps the real estate prices low, which keeps the cost of living low, which is how those places end up on these lists.

Many of these best retirement lists make no sense. I don't see how the top 20 best retirement cities can be so dramatically different from list to list. I get if they are just focusing on small towns vs major cities, but some are based on just how cheap, some on how active you can be, some on housing costs, some on taxation.

It is a complete crap shoot.

As long as Boomers keep retiring, the click-bait will keep coming, and then it will be the Millenials turn.

It is never ending!

Doesn't Pennsylvania have a lot of snow and ice in the winter? Just what the elderly don't want. They need hot hot hot, like Arizona and Florida.
