In far north Omaha, there is this neighborhood labelled "Florence" on Google Maps. Wikipedia also has an article on it, but they also have a Winter Quarters article, which is the same area. Which word do you use?

If you really wanted to be Omaha-Centric, you could name a far north Omaha neighborhood as Minne Lusa (which back in the day, was a large Italian dominated community in far North Omaha)..it still has some beautiful and unique home architecture..

But I think most people today associate far North Omaha as Florence.

Yes, today everyone refers to that general area of Omaha as Florence. I'd never even heard the Winter Quarters name until yu mentioned it, OP.

Winter Quarters was a Mormon campsite in the winter, I believe of 1845-46??

Today, the area that was once Winter Quarters is part of the neighborhood of Florence, located in North Omaha. The pioneer community is remembered with several attractions, including the Mormon Pioneer Cemetery, Cutler's Park, Mormon Trail Center and the Mormon Pioneer Memorial Bridge. The Winter Quarters Nebraska Temple was dedicated there in April 2001.

Anyway, this was the Florence area and there is a site in the Florence neighborhood and ?Tabernacle that has much of that history. I'm not Mormon but this was a significant historical site that is covered in local schools regarding the Mormon Trail. Across the river in Council Bluffs was the campsite prior to the movement across the Missouri. This campsite has historical significance because the longest military march in USA history started in Council Bluffs by the "Mormon Battalion" this group of Mormons volunteered for military battle in the SW United States in the 1840s (not sure what year). They marched from Council Bluffs Iowa to the mexican border but upon arrival found out the war had already ended. what a deal lol.

There is much Mormon history in the general area of Omaha/Council Bluffs. The Mormon Battalion Mustering Grounds on the campus of the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs includes a short trail with interpretative signage. This site is located within half a mile of the actual site of the mustering.

Good news, one of the oldest structures in Omaha will open soon.

Florence Mill, the original structure was built by the Mormons in their winter quarters, is now open after renovations. Although little to none of the original structure likely remains.
