What exactly happens to owners at the villages when they phase out from "active" retirement in their 50's and 60's to the more troublesome declining years in their 70's and 80's when health problems and progressive disorders like Alzheimer's and dementia interfere with their lives, i.e. lose the ability to drive, take care of themselves?

The place has been around decades so I presume their are patterns of behaviors. Do they sell and move out to move back north to family when things start to go downhill or stay put till they die with home help aides, assisted living, etc?

It is a community like any other in that way. Some move to lower maintenance homes, some will move with family or any of the other options that you mentioned.

Edit to add: You lose the ability to drive an automobile before a golf cart. Your time living in The Villages independently is longer than many, probably most, places. You can get to the doctor office and grocery store by cart.

Depends on your definition of active. My 86 year old dad plays golf 4 times a week. My mother also plays golf, but recently took up sculpting. There are many people here living independently into their 90s. I’ve seen a couple of folks over 100 enjoying the entertainment at the squares. As someone else pointed out, people drive golf carts long after giving up their cars. They are also testing self driving cars here.

When one does have enough health problems that it affects their day some do sell and move in with their kids, some get help aides, some move into the plethora of assisted living/memory care places around here.

I had to laugh at the assumption that active retirement is ends after your 60s.

We've visited the Villages and while there I heard a rumor about some plans to build multi-resident condo buildings, like apartments but you'd buy them, for people who don't want a singular home. Has anyone else heard about this? If so, any time frame for the build?

It's not a rumor, construction is in process. It is called the lofts at Brownwood. About 200 units or so. One year leases, minimum.

Thanks for the info!

So they're not for sale, but for like rent like apartments? I'm interested in purchasing not renting. I think there would be too much turnover with renting.

I don't know with certainty. At the risk of being Captain Obvious I would ask someone at The Villages sales. As sale people go they aren't pushy. Conversely, you can sign up for a newsletter established just for this property.

I was wondering where residents of The Villages go to church? After my wife and I left for a quick tour, we realized we did not see any churches? Thanks!

I don't have a per capita measurement of churches but they are certainly here at a ratio that seems on par with most of the US. Naturally, you do have to leave Villages property to get to a church. Given the size of TV it can seem that a church is not 'in your neighborhood ' but they are here, within a short drive.
