So does Tops vary a lot from one store to another while Wegmans is more consistent??
Wegmans are large stores, generally about 120,00 sq ft, with the except of a larger one in Syracuse and East ave in Rochester being smaller. Obviously there are more choices at Wegmans than a smaller store

Buffalo has one on Grant Street on the city’s West Side too.
In terms of the smaller metros/areas ; Auburn, Corning and somewhat Elmira have stores in the middle of the city. Auburn I believe is the only store in Downtown, with the one in Corning just west of its Downtown.
Watergarden, you asked about other food sources in the Owego area. Price Chopper?..not bad..not quite Wegman's..but for this area..decent variety. There are also some seasonal farm market stands. There is a small year round farm run store I go to..fresh from their farm eggs, unaldulterated beef products, etc... Just curious ..you mention " coming up this way"..are you from that metro section of the east ..D.C. to Philly to NYC/L.I.? Since that whole health " thing" 3 years ago...we have seen a modest amount of "pilgrims" relocating to rural upstate NY.
By the way..with a stated working fund of around 500K...you can definitely find a place to your liking in the southern tier, of which I spoke. If your house hunting
takes you to this area ( Bing. going west out through the Corning area ), you can direct messge me for any input I can offer.

Tops is a lot more willing than Wegmans to locate stores in urban environments, and that helps lend variety to the size of their stores. In the city of Buffalo, there is one Wegmans location and probably 8 or more Tops. The Tops location near my uncle's house in South Buffalo is quite small, as it had formerly been a 'B-Kwik', which was something of a hybrid between a 7-11 and a supermarket. But their suburban locations are pretty consistent, these days (when I was a kid in the early '90s, there was more variation among their suburban locations, but they've kinda standardized them with their newbuilds...new as of the '90s anyway, lol).

I wouldn't say Wegmans is unwilling, it's just their stores, and parking take up acres of land that isn't available in urban environments. Topps closed a couple stores 5 years ago, in Rochester, leaving only 2 in the city.
^Ironically, I can see both dynamics with Tops in Syracuse, as they closed a location in the city's Valley neighborhood, but also replaced a former Wegmans on the North Side of the city.
A lot of them are right at the city line around here and they closed one on West Genesee street in Westvale Plaza, but took over the former Peter's(a local chain) location on Nottingham Road not far from Syracuse University and expanded it.
There is also one in Shop City Plaza on the Syracuse/Salina line and another in DeWitt not too far from the city line on East Genesee Street.
Tops also took over a former P & C(another former local chain) in North Syracuse. So, they also have a history of taking over locations from chains that go out of business. Same in terms of being more apt to be in smaller towns as well: https://www.topsmarkets.com/StoreLoc...=New%20York&S=
That drive from Manlius to Cazenovia can be quite wooded and Cazenovia has a nice little lake that it is adjacent to. You also would be minutes from this park with a nice waterfall: https://www.madisoncounty.ny.gov/2312/Delphi-Falls-Park

unwilling to modify their business model for city-friendly locations...
Looks like there are 6 Tops locations in the city of Buffalo, so I overestimated somewhat. There are a couple others quite close to the city border, however. Tops' store locator is somewhat misleading, as they list 4 locations for Rochester, but I see that one is in suburban Penfield, and another appears to be in Greece (your territory if I'm not mistaken)

So, there appears to be some promising properties up here that fit or come close to the criteria.
Didn't realize P&C went out of business...the P&C in Penn Yan was my family's go-to when we'd spend a week on Keuka Lake in summers past
Upon googling...is it that they vacated the Syracuse area as opposed to going out of business altogether?
