It's a nice suburb. You're 30 minutes from St. George, an hour to an hour and a half from Las Vegas. It's pretty clean. Kinda boring, but well kept.

Great for someone looking for a quiet place to live with decent cheap meals nearby. Obviously, if you're old, it won't have the best hospitals.

Speaking as a recent visitor to Mesquite, I was quite impressed by the town. It conveyed a clean and new appearance. I stayed at the Best Western for two nights while exploring the Valley of Fire State Park. I saw this as well, particularly on the north side of I-15. No real bad areas, though Mesquite Blvd is kinda run down looking. My main gripe would be the 115 degree(+-) heat in the summer.

I will check out St. George in early Jan. My biggest issue with Mesquite is limited medical specialty providers. This same issue is already a big problem for me and my x in Elko. I heard the insurance either pays cabs to take people round trip all the way to Reno or it buys a Utah Shuttle ticket to a Salt Lake City and covers an over night hotel room. I limp along when I should easily have 5 specialists. I find primary doctors so far up here in Elko, to just be "bo-bo kissers and told me basically ER won't treat me." -I think this is about insurance.

If you can't afford "a normal house" then you won't find anything in or near St. George, which is unfortunate because that is a great place to live if healthcare is important to you.

I would suggest looking at Laughlin NV as an alternate to Mesquite, but chances are if you needed anything medical you would have to go across the river to Bullhead City, Arizona.
