That is very common throughout the US (and Europe). It is difficult to carve the letter "U" in stone. Also, many languages - like Latin - did not differentiate between the letter U and V.

Great photo and great to see the snow starting early, would appreicate if you could take a similar photo in the heart of winter during a great Nevada winter storm
