The apple-A sound in Nevada is how I heard it pronounced IN Nevada, BY Nevadans. I don’t like it but that’s their home state, not mine, so I do as the Romans do.

Same for Arvada, CO.
My mother (who could correct essays written in English, French, Spanish, and Latin) trained me to say aunt rather than the incorrect ant by saying "I didn't know my sister is a pest".

I just go against the grain and pronounce it "N eva da" just to watch apoplexy of the men, children wail and to hear the lamentations of the women!

I'm not a linguistic prescriptivist in general, but I disagree with you if the words are proper names. The "right" way to pronounce a personal name is the way the person says it. If your name is Stephen pronounced Steev-en, you should have no hesitation about correcting someone who says Steff-en.

The right way to pronounce a placename is the way the people who live there say it. It's Nev-adda because that's how people who live in Nevada say it, and they should know.

Ora-gone for Oregon is also wrong, because that's not how Oregonians say the name of their state.

Of course there is leeway if your native language or your accent/dialect lacks certain sounds. My German in-laws never did learn to say the English "th" sounds correctly, so although they called my husband's cousin Kathryn "Katrin," that was OK. Everyone understood it was just their accent.

Honestly Igor, where you're from we're just glad if we can comprehend the complete sentence. You may say Knee-va-duh anyway you wish.

I agree.

I cringe when hear people say Nevahda ....it's Nev-adda.....

Even in worse shape is Colorado....

More and more, I'm hearing Colorahdo.....not the "correct" Colo-raddo....
