I am extremely disappointed, to put it mildly, with the way many people just allow their dogs to wander free, with no supervision. Yes, for financial reasons I am temporarily living in one of the older sections of the city. While I like the relative peace and quiet where I live, I definitely do not like the unpredictability of people letting their dogs wander freely, which sometimes means wandering into other people's yards. I shouldn't have to play guessing games about how aggressive a dog is going to be, nor should I have the "friendliness" of someone else's dog inflicted on me whether I am interested in not. (There have been past situations, in other places, where I have had strange dogs jump up on me. And, oh, they were just friendly, but I don't need to deal with that.)

There's a lot to like about Lubbock, but sometimes its rough edge really is frustrating to me.

Frankly, it's no wonder people write off living in so many parts of the city. It would be more practical for my work commute if I were to continue living somewhat to the east, but I can definitely see the pull of the newer, developing sections to the west. It's easier to get away from some of the careless living one sees elsewhere in the city.

Edit: in general, I find Lubbockites more considerate than people in other cities where I have lived, so the dog thing is that much more puzzling. Obviously not everyone with dogs is doing this, but far too many are.

And this irresponsibility leads to stories like this one (albeit, thin on detail):

Default Letting dogs run free--in urban areas

Is this mostly a Hispanic thing? Is this mostly a matter of country habits? Is it mostly a poor people thing? Who is doing this?

Are there many neighborhoods in Lubbock where almost nobody will just let their dogs run free?

This seems to be a common problem in both lower-income and rural areas. In Dallas, there is a very bad loose dog problem in the poorer neighborhoods, and there have been many people attacked and one killed by a loose dog. https://www.dallasnews.com/news/2016...llas-has-died/

In the rural area where I live, most of our neighbors are responsible and keep their dogs in a fenced area. There are a couple of houses that I drive past where the dogs are always loose, and they are often out on the road, and chasing cars. It always makes me afraid that I am going to hit one of the dogs.
