While I could take fighting or leave fighting out of the game, think the NHL and affiliated leagues should consider this rule.
A game misconduct or misconduct to anyone who fights without a helmet on. Game if both are swinging or one’s still fighting willingly after knowing that at least 1 helmet is off.
A ref could under this idea just give a misconduct if he thinks that it wasn’t intentional (fighting after one loses a lid) because the player didn’t know a helmet came off or couldn’t stop a punch in time
Why do I want this? Believe me the NHL would be in the doghouse and lose the momentum they’ve gathered as far as fans etc the last 20 years if someone dies from a fight because they hit their head on the ice.
Has. never happened from what we know in North American Pro Hockey. It did happen though less than 10 years ago in Canadian Junior Hockey.
I’m just thinking if all the, 1/2 of it The NFL got from Damar Hamlin and the hit that almost cost him his life. But at least that was something within the rules of the NFL.
Technically fighting is illegal in The NHL. In the minds of some it’s just not punished enough.
Because of that if a death happened during a fight? Yea, most of us mote than casual hockey fans and The Canadian Media and Sponsors etc would probably keep it within the proper perspective (ex, The Players know the risk and they are fine with it, etc).
However the American Media and sponsors especially in places that aren’t like Minnesota and Massachusetts? Oh it would probably like the Hamlin story 3 times as worse.
Which would lead to lost revenue from advertisers and TV ratings.
So while I can live with fighting in The NHL at the level it is now and strictly enforcers almost gone from The Pro Game (it’s still there in say leagues lower than say the ECHL), I think the NHL needs this proposal before it’s too late.
In summary if one of the combatants loses a helmet during a fight on purpose or by accident, the fight stops if it doesn’t one or both get a least a Misconduct or a Game Misconduct.
Do this before it’s too late. If someone say died from say a legal hit (Bill Masterton in 1967 that’s a totally different situation

College hockey needs to allow fighting. People would start watching it. I think it can be as big as football. College hockey as it is barely has any checking. Its like a very skilled men's league.

Also the 3 v 3 overtime means the team with the faster, smaller players will likely win. 3 defenders means more space to move into.
