May be coming to help out at the Fairbanks hospital.

Any recommendations or contacts appreciated AWD 4WD or FWD with winter tires is fine rather save $ than go fancy.

Thanks.

I suggest buying a beater with a heater then selling it when you leave. Rental cars are insanely expensive here, but you can pick up an old Subaru or other AWD/FWD/4WD soccer mom car for $3k. The best source is probably Facebook Marketplace.

Thank you for coming up to help our community, or for considering it.

Good advice above. Look for a mid to late 90's Subaru with the 2.2 engine, rather than the 2.5 that's prone to blowing head gaskets.

If you have experience driving on snow and icy roads, most FWD small automobiles will be fine in Fairbanks, North Pole, Ester, Two Rivers, and so on. What makes the most difference during the winter are the tires. For example, before I retired I drove a Toyota Corolla at least 5 days per week to work. The winter tires I used (and still use) were a set of 4 Blizzak. I only drove a 4WD truck (set to Auto-4WD) during or right after snow storms, not because the Corolla would not make it though the snow, but because the truck's seat is quite high compared to the seat in the Corolla, and the extra heigh helps with road visibility.

My 4Runner was my DD in Anchorage. Put Hakkapeliitta 5s studded and ran with those during winter. The studs gave me 20 ft reduced stopping distance. Changed back to Pirelli Scorpions in the other "seasons"

I talked with a rental outfit today $34/day. good price considering they put Blizzaks and oil and engine plug in.

$34/day for three months would buy a $3000 car. So, the car purchase would be the better option, IF the car is "decent!"

That's not bad, since 90 days x $34.00 = $3,460.00 and you don't have to worry about the cost of maintenance. Used cars aren't cheap at the moment, specially if you don't know if they are in good condition. All depends on how much you are earning in three months. It is also possible you could carpool with some of your coworkers (?). Also, if you can find an apartment or room near the hospital, you can save some cash as long as it is not expensive.

I wonder if anyone who has cars listed on Turo would be looking to rent during the off season?
