I may just change my latitude for late fall/early winter and go south to an island or something.

I’ll stick with my plan to go in March to see my brother and his wife in Anchorage and head up to their cabin in lake Louise. They have tons of pics they’ve taken at the cabin of some amazing auroras! Perhaps I can take a flight up to Fairbanks from Anchorage and spend a couple of nights up there and cross my fingers that I catch one up there!

I wouldn't waste the time and money to go to Fairbanks just to see northern lights if you are already at a cabin at Lake Louise. That will be a prime spot to see the aurora.

Anchorage (where I live) has a lot of light pollution and a high percentage of cloudy days in October. I have seen some spectacular displays here but they really have to be cranking to overcome city lights.

I agree with Ray, March is the best month to come up if you are looking to see northern lights.
Thanks!

Light pollution from the city plus air pollution gives the photos a sort of brownish tint. But on a clear night, without smog, the camera still can capture faint Northern Lights without any problem. In this case you can use high ISO speeds and expose just the lights. The brownish or grayish tint I am referring to (air pollution), is shown ion the photo below. This layer of smug is what gives the beautiful sunset golden colors.

If photographing faint auroras, even on a full moon, the camera at high ISO still can capture the lights, but you may have to edit the photo to reduce the amount of brightness on the foreground (snow):
