Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico was in a life-threatening condition in hospital Wednesday after he was shot multiple times in a stomach, in an assassination attempt.
He is a known ally of Russia, campaigns against LGBTQ+ rights, and anti-American views.
Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová said the suspected gunman was detained by the police. She said law enforcement agencies will release more information when they can and asked the public not to spread unconfirmed rumors.
Attacks against elected officials are virtually unheard of in recent European Union history.
Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok referred to the suspect — who was charged with premeditated murder — as a “lone wolf” who did not belong to any political groups, though he said the attack itself was politically motivated.
“I can confirm that this person is not a member of any right-wing or left-wing radicalized party."
The shooter was Juraj Cintula, a 71-year-old retiree who was known as an amateur poet, and may have previously worked as a security guard at a mall in the country’s southwest.
