As a young boy in the 1960s I live in the Belmont area of Dayton. We lived on Carlisle Ave. and later on Holly Ave. There was a house near Wayne Ave. and Arbor Blvd. that was owned by the Ohmer Family (as I recall). As a boy, I would visit their house...two old ladies lived there (Ohmer Sisters). Their property was more ornate and larger than the others in the neighborhood.

They were very old ladies (spinster-like) and always dressed in white long old-fashioned dresses.

Ohmer Park may now be Walnut Hills Park, but I'm uncertain about that.

Does anyone know about the Ohmer Sisters? The Ohmer Family?

I'm a Dayton history buff!

Nope, but there is a short street named Ohmer between Linden and 35.

I found this, which is interesting.

Joe,

Thank you very much for the Ohmer info. I believe the Ohmer sisters were likely 70ish when I visited them as a boy (ca 1969-70)...definitely in the area of Arbor and Wayne. So, this would make them possible sisters (children) of the furniture Ohmers. It is possible that they donated a property known as Ohmer Park in its day...later renamed Walnut Hills Park. This location may be where their house was located and subsequently torn down. They were gracious to the neighborhood children, though reclusive. Of course, the Dayton Mental Hospital was very close...I remember loud speaker announcements in the neighborhood warning residents of escaped patients. I am now 66 and am finally able to take a closer look at the history that surrounded my youth. Thanks again, Joe!
