Best towns to retire to? Depends on many lifestyle preferences including healthcare preferences and requirements.

Anybody have reactions to the Fort Morgan redo efforts?

There's also the simple matter of finding a doctor who is taking new Medicare patients. Based on reading these forums I've scratched one town off our list (not in CO) because of this issue.

I haven't spent much time there since the redo but I do have some family there and follow a couple of facebook groups with several members from the area. It seems most of the longer term residents are not thrilled, and view the whole thing as a disaster for the town as a whole.

What about Grand Junction? I’ve heard a number of positive things about it.

City, not town.

This article raised some concerns about costs to town related to project and secrecy.
https://heavy.com/entertainment/hgtv...-morgan-drama/

A promo for the show said the town had no idea the project was coming. Later they call it a makeover but the show was titled "takeover". Not wise imo but see what the shows do when air. Not sure 18 renovations are really a takeover or town makeover when I heard what some of them are but they can only do much. Town will have to take it from there.

Promo had some diversity in pictures and speech but not til the very end.

A city video from a few years before was pretty well done except for being 100% whites over 50 in pictures and speech.

While looking up these links, I saw the newspaper report 3 attempted teen abductions from a single day.

An article said the project aimed to increase "charm" and lure people off the highway. That might help but obviously more is needed than that.

The city video included statement such as: "you know everybody and everybody knows you", "people help people" and "we're like a big family". While there surely is some truth in that, I doubt it is that simple now (or in past). They're a pretty big town now moving into small city in some ways and in some eyes.

One person on the show video said Fort Morgan's downtown was "on life support".

Why does that happen? Usually it is a lot about pricing and convenience (parking, selection, advertising, staffing, etc.). Murals, flower baskets, repaired awnings, etc. are minor helps.

Like I said earlier, if they wanted to see a downtown that is truly on life support, they should've ventured 8 miles to the east. Brush is in much worse shape than Morgan.

Independent business, downtown or otherwise, have little chance to compete on GOODS where corporate bulk buying / price bargaining and lack of price effective alternative distribution chains or widespread internet buying are in play.

Independent business / downtowns should focus on services and service enhanced goods. Or offer the very lowest price, super convenience or maybe higher quality than readily available elsewhere.
