A Niagara Falls/Rochester freeway would've been a godsend to us. I can only imagine if the state extended 531 further west beyond Washington St./Route 36 how much faster it would be to get to Niagara Falls. I used to make the commute to Niagara County at least 2-3 times a week. The quickest non-toll route nowadays between the two cities is either Route 31/31A or 104. Plus, if you live closer to Lake Ontario like Kendall, Hilton, or Hamlin, it's not feasable to travel 20 miles south to Batavia or Bergen to catch the thruway.

I believe completing rt531 is a no brainer. Not only would it connect all the canal towns, it could connect with the 990. The current rt 31 is a terrible road

IIRC 531 wasn't extended for a variety of reasons, but the #1 reason was the Thruway Authority was against it. Typical corrupt NYS politics.

Please explain what would be "corrupt" about this?

Corrupt: having or showing a willingness to act dishonestly in return for money or personal gain.

What, personally, does anyone on the Thruway Authority gain by being against another roadway?

It wasn't built because Lockport and Niagara County lost already half it's population and most of its industries, business's & malls etc.... City of Lockport population is down to 20,000 and is still losing population every year and every single year still raise property taxes and give raises to their union workers and politians just like Niagara Falls N.Y., Buffalo does

Lockport is a shell of it once was. We have had a business there since the mid 1950's and it was once the busiest and most profitable. Now we are thinking of just shutting the doors and walking away. The local economy, since GM downsized, has tanked. The GM employees used to have gold plated benefits and were our best customers. No longer the case. The only thing keeping Lockport afloat is the proximity to Amherst. Believe me I know from first hand experience.

All 3 of Niagara County Malls were empty went bankrupt and closed Lockport Mall, Summit Park & Rainbow Center and the now same thing has happened in Buffalo Erie County The Eastern Hills Malls, Boulevard Mall & McKinley Malls are empty, decaying and in bankruptcy, Buffalo Metro only has 1 mall left the Walden Galleria. Buffalo Metro use to have 15 malls back in 1990's
