I just discovered _Awakening the Buddha Within: Eight Steps to Enlightenment_ by Lama Surya Das. Is this as good as I think it might be? For those who've read it, your impressions?

I think I would look for a teacher who was focused properly, not one who has been involved in sexual misconduct by using his teaching of Buddhism to do so -- which he has admitted.

Well I would write people but they wouldn't bother to write me back, so what was the point.

I'm glad you told me that, though. There is a Buddhist community (& Buddhist "university" ?) in Boulder, Colorado which I very nearly committed to in my youth. The reason I didn't is because of wide spread and well-reported dalliances between some of the teachers and students. Actually a roommate studied there, and was approached.

How can someone have something of value to impart and exploit others sexually.

I can state unequivocally that anyone who has genuinely experienced Oneness would never even contemplate sexual exploitation or exploitation of ANY kind. Anyone admitting it has to be a fraud, IMO.

Yes, that's what I thought, too.

I'm surprised no one has any input about this book aside from the author having a sleazy side.

This is just me, but I'm not a fan of Buddhist teachers born in the west. I'd rather struggle through a translation from a Theravadan monk actually from Thailand or other Theravadan countries, than trust in translation of a culture from a guy who went to the University Of Buffalo (if you know what I mean).

The other issue may be (again, at least for me) that I want to read about Theravada Buddhism; I'm not interested in the other schools...at least not much.
