The definition of the term "heavy" obviously varies between people. Bend sees maybe 8 trains a day and is a city of around 100k people. A city of similar size and population (80k) is Flagstaff, AZ sees an average of over a 100 trains a day. Then again, that is a massive East-West corridor.

I don't know the topography there, but train horn noise can easily travel 5 miles. The rumble and vibration from the train going along the tracks also can be felt for a long distance...my guess is at least 1 mile.
