There used to be a place here in town where they would stack the onion rings real high; they were real crispy and greaseless too.

We are on a different page if you think the Outback Bloomin' Onion qualifies as a great onion ring, though. All of the grease that settles in the bottom really gives me indigestion.

So, how about it, are there any good onion rings in the city's restaurants, and where are they?

So I come back to see that there have been 13 views to this question but no answers.

Years ago, Richard Collin, author of the New Orleans Cookbook and the New Orleans Underground Gourmet wrote that he felt sorry for the people of Baton Rouge as they had to drive to either Lafayette or New Orleans to get a good restaurant-prepared meal. While many who may not be able to tell the difference between a select graded piece of beef and a prime one might want to argue with Collin, after many years I've come to accept Collin's assertions.

Oh well, a decent onion ring from a restaurant really isn't that big a deal.

Yeah very weird thread for Baton Rouge. This is a topic for a culinary starved city. Which Baton Rouge is not.

Edit: I love nola but the food snobiness is absolutely stupid. Its like NYC laughing at Stamford because they don't have Michelin star restaurants.

Dunno, but... if they aren't BATTER dipped with a local recipe they aren't the winner.

Thank you, MrRational, you are spot on. There used to be restaurants that piled them more than a foot high, but these have been taken over by the national chains that want to feed you lots of grease.

As for Annie-himself, it would be a mistake to say that all his taste is in his mouth. In fact, we have not a single restaurant here that could rival a Commander's Palace, sad to say.

I've never eaten at Commanders Palace even when I lived next to it. Are Juban's, Stroube's, etc sub par?
Again, I still think it's silly to compare a world-famous, world-class culinary city to Baton Rouge.

Of course you've named two of the city's best known upscale restaurants. The wife and I often went to Juban's—hardly known for its onion rings, BTW—but as many formerly great restaurants go, so did this one. Our last visit was more than 10 years ago.

Friends and I have almost come to blows when arguing the merits, or lack of, in places like Louisiana Lagniappe, a dreadfully loud place with embarrassingly poor food. On one occasion a visitor friend from Seattle was my guest at this mysteriously esteemed diner but I was not surprised to see that he, too, left the majority of his meal on his plate. I tried to shrug the poor experience off on these two friends who had assured me that the establishment had been improving continuously. Oh, if only Zorba's would return to reclaim the building! Even the new owners of Sammy's have done their utmost to sully this once most popular eatery. My wife and I went there for her birthday a few weeks ago; vowing to each other never to return to such mediocre food.

OKay, so I do like to support local restaurants, but I do think the Outback Steakhouse Bloomin' Onion is the best one, followed by the Cactus Bloom at Texas Roadhouse. Honestly the Blooming' Onion is probably my favorite fried onions anywhere period, not just in this area.

Burgersmith does have good onion rings though. I'm also satisfied with the onion rings at Fred's on the River. In general the best onion rings would NOT be at a classy restaurant.
