But surely those are icons and while well known internationally, would equate to the same question being asked about The UK, as being Big Ben or Tower of London?

Probably not the biggest international tourist destination, but a must for every mainland Aussie to go down there at least once, hire a car for a week or 2, and do the whole island thing.

But the least quintessential state surely? Recent few people I know that toured there within a twelve month period, both spoke about how expensive they found it.

For those who view Australian history primarily through the lens of the transportation era, Tasmania offers some pretty intense experiences. I don't think any other state offers the same windows into that period.

Perhaps, but a bit of a niche market I would suggest. A little akin to Australians who make a point in visiting war graves in Europe perhaps? For international tourists, probably New Zealand would be of more interest if desiring that sort of place. It would be Sydney and QLD , I'd have thought that would entice most (by far) of the international trade.
A lot of folk overseas: deserts, kangaroos and convicts….
But it is pretty interesting from an historical perspective.
They might be aware of it to varying degrees, but I'm not sure they're that interested in it – probably because it's not that interesting; probably because they don't really think about Australian history through any lens – anymore than the average Australian tourist to the US wants to see where the Mayflower landed or where the Declaration of Independence was signed.
Surely there's enough convict porn in Sydney to satisfy all but the most diehard convict nuts?
