The Gardner Farm Inn, a five-room bed-and-breakfast on the outskirts of Troy, usually attracts families of local college students, professors and other guests throughout the year.

But this summer, the vast majority of the clientele are from the five boroughs of New York City as many people are flocking to inns, Airbnb rentals and other upstate destinations for weekend getaways or longer vacations.

The late spring lockdowns caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which initially hit New York City the hardest, have prompted many to seek fresh air and refuge in places where coronavirus infections and deaths have been far less severe.

"By coming upstate, especially in Rensselaer County where we have had relatively low impact [from the virus], they have confidence," said John Hughes, owner of the Gardner Farm Inn. "They like to be in the green space. I've sent more people to Grafton [state] park and Peebles Island and the Troy seawall just to be outdoors and get some exercise."

A woman from New York City who was a recent guest told Hughes: "I can't believe I'm finally breathing freely. Here I can stretch out."

The cancer spreads.
Kiss your quality of life goodbye.
Even in the 'hood. The hipsters will come to gentrify and eventually chase everyone out, like in Williamsburg for example.

I think Troy has been seeing a little bit of that in and around its Downtown already.

I wouldn't be surprised if they caught wind of a neighborhood like this: https://www.google.com/maps/@42.7236...6!9m2!1b1!2i47

As if the quality of life in most of Troy/Lansingburgh was good already lol.

Like ckh said, I think Troy has been wanting the hipster crowd to come through and keep the vibe of downtown going. Downtown is cool and the neighborhoods east of the dense part of the city are decent. I think it'll only help if downstaters come and stay a while.

These jerkoffs start moving in, buying up property, turn things upside down and wind up displacing and chasing out the residents.
It may be a craphole to many people but regardless it is someones home. You want to gentrify, fine. Do it so that it benefits and enriches the people that already live there.
Not chase them out.
