Abalone Cove Shoreline Park & Ecological Reserve

Abalone Cove Shoreline Park & Ecological Reserve is a state-managed recreational and sanctuary for animals and marine life. It features two sandy beaches, numerous tide pools, a network of crisscrossing trails, and viewing areas atop bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island.

Abalone Cove Beach can be accessed via a long trail from the south end of the main parking lot. The footpath that leads down from the picnic area on the bluffs is not too steep and can be easily managed by children as well as adults. Visitors should note that lifeguards are on duty only during the summer months. Also, fires, barbecues, and dogs are not allowed.

To reach Sacred Cove Beach requires walking along Palos Verdes Drive South to one of two trailheads between Portuguese and Inspiration Points. Again, the descent to the shore is rather gradual, but hikers should be aware that rattlesnakes have been found in this area and use caution.

Abalone Cove Shoreline Park is located at 5970 South Palos Verdes Drive, Rancho Palos Verdes, California 90275-5924. It is open daily from 9am to 4pm from Memorial Day through Labor Day, opening at noon on weekdays the remainder of the year; closed on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. A parking fee of $5 is charged per vehicle.
