Nightlife - San Diego, California

Nightlife

After a hard day playing outdoors, who wants to have more fun? Most of us in San Diego. While the city isn’t known for the kind of trendy, chic, and wild nightlife you might find in Los Angeles or Manhattan, San Diego’s after-hours persona is alive and well.

Here you can choose from a smorgasbord of nighttime pleasures. In this chapter we’ll give you the rundown on clubs, bars, brewpubs, and independent coffeehouses. We didn’t list Starbucks or other chains; just follow your nose to find them.

If there’s a cover charge or a specific dress code for a nightspot, we’ve added that information, but keep in mind that things change. And don’t be shocked if you’re carded. Club owners and barkeeps have the right to ask anyone for ID at any time. Even if you’re in the over-30 crowd, you’ll need to carry identification. There’s nothing more maddening than being turned away from a happening club, crow’s-feet or gray hair notwithstanding.

Remember that in California there’s no smoking in public establishments, and that includes bars, lounges, and restaurants. To cater to their smoking customers, quite a few bars have installed outdoor patios or rooftop lounges. Casinos and entertainment venues on Indian reservations, of course, are exempt. Most respect both smokers and nonsmokers, but call ahead if your preference is for an absolutely smoke-free zone or if you want to puff away with reckless abandon.

While there’s plenty to do outside the Central San Diego area, the Gaslamp Quarter, in downtown San Diego, is definitely one of the hottest places to party. Relative to the old (in both senses of the word) venue in Hollywood, the House of Blues serves up food, firewater, and “nothin’ but the blues”—oh, and funk, jam, rock, and alternative tunes, too.

When we formulated our list, made phone calls, and took field trips (it was a tough job, but someone had to do it), one thing was clear: Clubs, pubs, coffeehouses, and other entertainment venues change. One spot might be hot with rock music and a month later spin house music or mashups. The next time you visit you might find a jazz band, a poetry reading, or a passel of square dancers. So though we’ve tried to make our listings as current and accurate as possible, it’s best to call ahead and inquire about the types of music or entertainment you’ll find.

With all these caveats out of the way, it’s time to introduce you to San Diego’s abundant hot spots. Enjoy!
