Would do non refundable for just 2 reasons: 1. A hostel where the bed is inexpensive. 2. Where I am absolutely positive that I will be there.

I am just the opposite. The difference in rate for a refundable room is only a couple of bucks a night. We had to cancel a trip last minute and had to eat the cost of the rooms in 2 different places, that was clearly more than we had saved over the years.

I have stopped booking on the third party sites. The belief that they offer savings just does not seem to be the case, maybe it was years ago but today I find the same rate at the hotel and just deal directly with them. I will never book a non-refundable room ever again.

Whenever I make a travel plan, I am absolutely positive I will be there.

Unless a war breaks out or something.

The problem is there are no absolutes in life. I was convinced we would make our trip too, then a leaking pipe caused us to cancel the trip and deal with a big problem. Someone could always get sick or injured, things happen so from now on I'll be more prepared for that by booking rooms that offer refunds.
