Washington County is either the fastest growing county in the United States or one of the top three counties. I purchased my home down here in 2009. In that time, residents of Ivins have seen much of the vacant land within city boundaries built on. No one here opposes all development. Development is important in terms of tax base and providing services that residents of the city need. However, the development we are seeing is often haphazard and even reckless.

Unfortunately, though, little consideration has gone into issues like available water (we live in the northern part of the Mojave Desert). Nor, are we doing a good job of establishing things like parks. A huge development that will cater to professional golfers is going in just down the road from here known as "Black Rock Desert". It will consume thousands and thousands of gallons of water.

I went to a candidates meeting last week with Sharon Barton and Sharon Gillespie who are running for the Ivins City Council. Both are as concerned about reckless growth as I am. I urge anyone living in this area to consider both these candidates for the Ivins City Council.

The classic disaster scenario is that developers and RE Brokers do whatever it takes to get on the various elected positions and councils and ram through their projects. Good luck.
