Specifically, Interstate 440 between Wade Avenue and Walnut Street, and 11 miles of I-40 between Raleigh and Clayton. No word given on when they are expected to end, however, and given the history of most NCDOT projects going months if not years over schedule, that might be a smart omission on the department's part here.
I'm just glad they're gonna fix that clusterf*ck that is the Western Blvd/I-440 interchange
Agreed, that one sucks big time currently witht he left lane merge onto I-440. The I-40 / I-440 interchange will also get an overhaul to not be such a death trap. Looks like the Western Blvd interchange is going to utilize a diverging diamond:
Wow, that is a massive rework there. No wonder it will take such a long time.
...and that's just this interchange. They currently have 3 alternatives going for the Hillsborough Street one, all of which are just as -- if not more -- intricate. Total rework is happening to the major interchanges and the minor once are pretty much getting their bridges rebuilt. Will be a disrupter for sure.
Wonder when the I-40 & I-440/US 1 interchange is going to get rebuilt?
According to page 2-5 of the latest Environmental Assessment, not during the I-440 widening project unfortunately. But we don't have to wait too long, as the I-40 & I-440/US 1 interchange is supposed to be rebuilt with STIP Project I-5703, which is scheduled to begin construction in 2022.
