This is the Northeast. Unless a dress code is specified, people are showing up casual. No one really dresses up for anything.

OP, I don't think *you* should feel out of place if you're wearing a black suit to a funeral, as that's obviously correct. That said, to me attending a funeral is primarily about supporting the surviving members of the family of the deceased, so the most important thing is being there are trying you best to lift up those who have lost a loved one, not what you're wearing.

At least if people have nicer clothes as well as the more appropriate reserved and somber colors I think they should take the trouble to wear them as a matter of respect. But, if they don't have such clothes and especially if they don't have the money to buy them just for the occasion, I think it's fine to wear what you have.

I noticed only a slight shift when I moved from MA in the 70s to Ohio. I wasn’t sure if it was the times, or change of location, but I think it was a bit of both. We still got dressed up to go out for dinner or to a party. Teachers wore dresses, or dress shirts.

In the 90s, we moved to the country in Ohio, and dressing up for a Christmas party meant a red sweatshirt, appliquéd with a Christmas tree.

So now, we live in the south and the women tend to dress up a bit more than up north.

We will always dress up for a funeral, or a wedding, regardless of what others do. There are certain ceremonies of life that should be respected.

That’s what I noticed!

We had to go for a life celebration memorial and were asked by a family member to wear the bright clothing in favorite colors of the deceased..

The majority did, others went casual
