Shortness of breath and things of that nature.. In general, are likely more psychosomatic than anything. It's like taking a drink of massively hot coffee (Times 100) and not being able to spit it out for 5 minutes. You just won't be spitting out the top layers of 'skin' from the inside of your mouth.

The cramps are not uncommon, either. A few people have written up the mechanism that causes it.. I've just always put it down to the fact that you're eating this one chip.. Probably on an empty or semi-empty stomach and.. Basically, your intestines are saying "Nope, you can just go **** yourself with that"
Eh I mean if kids younger than that can eat hot peppers than this seems like a 'you' problem not an everybody problem. I'm sure the family will get money if it can be proven the death came from the chip.

People die from alcohol related injuries every day...kids and adults.

Definitely need more info. Like the autopsy.

I don't blame the mother for lashing out and wanting to know of thinking she knows what caused it. The reporting on this sucks. Quoting a distraught mother is one thing. Jumping on the hypothesis and running with it is another.

In terms of hotness, jalapeno peppers are about 5,000 Scoville heat units (SHU).

This chip has Carolina Reaper Peppers and Scorpion Chile Peppers.

Carolina Reaper Peppers are about 2,000,000 SHU. That's 400 times hotter than a jalapeno.

Scorpion Chile Peppers are about 1,200,000 SHU. That's 240 times hotter than a jalapeno.

I would not have believed this stuff could actually kill you, and if it can, why is it being sold for human consumption? While this may be the first death, apparently, numerous ER visits have been reported, most commonly for intense stomach pain, with reports of esophagus damage, heart attacks and at least one person going into seizures and another losing consciousness. And this is nominally "food"... that makes no sense!

We should wait and see until the autopsy comes out. It could be completely unrelated.

I have done the one chip challenge. It's wasn't fun but I'm not sure how it could kill someone. Maybe an allergic reaction?

Typical media sensationalizing something for the sake of clicks and views.

Lets just say the child's cause of death is attributed to something else and not the chip. There will be no apology article. It just gets forgotten and the media will move on, but meanwhile folks will continue to believe the chip was the cause.

The damage is done. Guilty by media reporting.

Sadly my 7 and 9 yr old knew exactly what this chip challenge was. My 7 yr old goes Brent Rivera did that. I had to Google Brent Rivera lol. Yikes.
