The Mexican ambassador also asserted that the United States needs to “overhaul” its immigration system, and, in particular, bring in more “refugees,” because “people are waiting” (Madam Ambassador seems to believe that the Central American migrants attempting to stream into the U.S. via Mexico are “refugees,” rather than mainly economic migrants using asylum as a magic word to get into our country)

Who does she think she is dictating our immigration policies to us? Economic migrants which most Mexican and Central Americans are do not have the right to claim asylum in our country. Apparently, she doesn't know our asylum policies nor does she care. She wants to dictate our asylum policies to us to!

This whole article made me want to puke! I guess we are supposed to be the flophouse, doormat and employment agency to every country below our borders with no thought as to how it would negatively impact our own citizens.

Perhaps this should be moved to legal immigration. The ambassador is discussing changes to legal immigration policies.

Your clue was mass migration. The only mass migration from south of our border is from illegal aliens and bogus asylum seekers many of whom sneak over our border because they don't have a valid case for asylum. You might want to read the entire article and it will be clearer to you. Yes, guest worker programs were mentioned in the article also but the bottom line is she was virtually talking about illegal immigration.

Here's a good clue she said, "Perhaps most problematically, Mrs. Barcena Coqui lectured Americans on how they should view immigration: “If you conceptualize migration as a national security issue, if you [push for]securitization of migration, and what is even worse, if you criminalize migration, then your approach always [will]be policing, contentious [and]reduction of migration".

We don't criminalize legal immigration so it's illegal immigration she is speaking of.

Yeah who thinks of legal immigration when they hear the term "Mass Migration?"

Especially given Mexico's history of aiding illegals into our country.

People who actually read and understood the article. Something you clearly failed to do.

The article is discussing temporary worker visas (like the ones Trump expanded this year) and refugees (which fall under asylum protection). Both of which are legal.

No one's calling for mass immigration of undocumented people.

I read the article. I understood the article. I also understand that Mexico has a long history of aiding illegals into our country. You can put lipstick on a pig but it is still a pig.

We don't need advice from Mexico about our immigration policies. They are a big reason why we have so many illegals in our country in the first place. I would suggest that the ambassador look with in and focus on her own country. They certainly have enough problems of their own.

Ill say it again. When someone here's the term mass immigration no one thinks of legal immigration, they think of hoards of people trying to enter illegally.

I can call drug dealers unlicensed pharmacists, I can talk about making it easier for them to do their trade. At the end of the day I am still talking about drug dealers. The ambassador used the term mass immigration to sweeten it up a little.

Right. The OP read "mass immigration" in the title but then failed to read the article. The ambassador is discussing our legal immigration policies. Which is why this belongs in legal immigration.

What people assume by those words is not the article is about. The OP, herself, even points out that this is about our legal immigration policies in the initial post. So it's just in a misplaced forum.

Neither the OP, nor the article discusses illegal immigration. It's in the wrong forum.

From reading the article what the Ambassador is seeking is a loosening of immigration standards to let the flood of prospective migrants in legally.

Of course she would, because Mexico can’t handle them.
