When did the fanny pack become the boob bag? (fashion, looks, thin)

I'm noticing something that looks suspiciously like the old fanny pack that fell out of favor long ago (sometimes worn on the belly, to even greater derision) has now migrated north and to the side and is worn not on the hips, but across the chest, nestled just under one breast. Wherever it's worn now, I'm glad to see it back, as all I ever carry is a phone, wallet and keys, and this size bag fits the bill.
I have to laugh at the names. When "fanny packs" became popular in the 1980s, the term 'fanny' was already old fashioned. It should have been called a butt bag. I wonder how many people got robbed by having their money/cards/keys in a flimsy zippered pouch on their backside, completely out of sight? Crowded arena, on a train or bus, etc. It wasn't long until fanny packs did a 180 and were worn on the front side, and now cross body for better security.
Whenever I carry a handbag or any bag with a shoulder strap (eg: laptop case) I always wear it cross body. Much harder for a thief to grab it and run.

Easy, however, for some rando on a scooter to grab it and drag you by and break both your kneecaps. This is what the woman in NYC was wearing in that now-infamous video.
We always wore shoulder bags crossways, but they were long enough to hang at our hip/fingertip level. I would find having it snuggled under my boob and pressed so tight against me uncomfortable.

Despite the name, I never saw anyone wearing them on their backside. "Belly bag" was really a more accurate name. I only ever saw them worn in front.

It's really not uncomfortable at all, as long as you aren't carrying a ton of heavy stuff. I just carry my phone, key fob, sunglasses, and a chapstick. It's more comfortable there than hanging by my hip, TBH.

Just yesterday I saw a woman in Seattle with a fanny pack worn that way and pointed it out to my wife, "is that a fanny pack, what an odd way to wear it." and she told me that it has been popular now for a few years because it's harder for anyone to snatch it.
