I will be visiting Grand Marais with my dog the first week of November. I checked the city website and googled, but have not been able to find definitive information on whether leashed dogs are allowed on the beach or not? It looks like the city is generally dog friendly, but I don't want to take anything for granted. Can anyone advise or provide a link to this information?

Also, what is the likelihood of encountering bear on town trails, e.g. Harborview Trail and Artist's Point? I will follow the normal bear protocols, but am wondering how concerned I should be? I know it will be hunting season, so probably won't be venturing too far off the trails near town.

Any guidance, suggestions, or advice appreciated! Thank you!

Leashed dogs are on those two small rock beaches all the time. There is no posting. There is the lakefront in front of the main area of town and also on the other side of the large parking lot area near Artist Point Parking. As for bears out on the point highly not likely at all. No worries. If hiking the SHT, a bear encounter is more likely, but still slim. However an bear encounter is possible. Just be aware. Wear orange if hiking during hunting season on the out of town trails. Dog bags are used.

I would worry more about about wolves than bears. Keep your dog leashed and close to you and you should be fine. Also, wear some orange for hunting season. An orange hat is sufficient when you're on trails.

Because it is hunting season I will only be walking on trails in town, but my dog and I will still wear orange just to be safe, and yes, duly noted about the possibility of wolves. I grew up rural and have seen far too many dogs, cattle, and people mistaken for deer to want to take any chances. Thank you!
