Ive been Receiving Unemployment Benefits from NJ but i just moved to Colorado this week. I’ve been doing research but I’m unclear on what I need to do in order to continue receiving benefits in Colorado while I look for new employment. I don’t want to run into any issue down the line so if anyone knows the proper steps I need to take I’d appreciate the help! Also, I used Indeed when searching for work back in NJ. Any recommendations for job searching portholes, specifically in the restaurant and hospitality industry.

Thank you

Benefits will be through the state you were working in. You cannot get Colorado state unemployment benefits unless you worked in Colorado for at least 6 months out of the last year. You should still be able to receive the NJ benefits for however long you continue to be eligible to receive them as long as you continue to claim them through whatever the process is there.

Also, just an FYI, CO is notoriously slow to deal out any benefits and requires a LOT of identification and continuous information from you to continue to claim them. Part of it's for fraud prevention and part is because the Colorado Department of Labor & Employment is way understaffed. When I got laid off last year it took me a full 3 months to get my payment (and luckily I got all that backpay from when I became eligible so it was a huge amount when I finally did get it).

Not at all familiar with hiring in the food service industry, but I couldn't imagine the most desirable positions and places would advertise on Indeed. In fact, doing a quick check, most appear to be chains, schools, or healthcare. You might have to hit the ground and go talk up a few host staff.

I 2nd ShampooBanana's assessment on claiming benefits.

You may want to check out the Pikes Peak Workforce Center: https://ppwfc.org/ - You can register, or do a quick job search without registering. Not sure what you do, but a quick search using keyword "Cook" brings up quite a few openings, and there's a few wait staff positions as well.
