Hello everyone. Our family is considering relocating from PA to somewhere warmer. I think we've somewhat narrowed it down to the following places, but are open to suggestions too. We would prefer to be in a somewhat rural area within reasonable commuting distance to that city (30-60 mins?) for work purposes.
Primary criteria:
-Warm most of the year, mild and/or no winter (trying to find the middle ground between feeling imprisoned in the winter vs in the summer)
-would like to be able to buy some property or house with property in the somewhat near future without having to sell appendages
- low crime
- good/ decent public schools
- would like to be within 1.5 hours of a decent airport
All are good choices but I would choose Winston-Salem. It gets rural pretty fast outside a 20:minute from downtown. Land prices may be more affordable in Forsyth or Davie County, and the Piedmont Triad Intl. Airport is affordable.

Throw in Yadkin or Southern Stokes as well. Winston is surrounded by a sea of red to the North, West, and South. Yadkin would be more affordable than Davie as the W-S suburbs haven't really encroached across the river as it has in Davie. Pilot Mountain and Hanging Rock State Parks are within the area... and the foothills and southern VA mountains are within an hour or so.
West Knoxville suburbs are beautiful, with tons of shopping, restaurant, bar, amenities, while giving options of pure suburban or suburban/rural. The prices are fast increasing though, so you might find them more expensive than Pennsylvania.
Quick access to huge areas of wilderness on the Cumberland Plateau or Smoky Mountain/Blue Ridge Mountain regions.
Same with Greenville. Great surrounding suburbs and a fast-growing city. But prices are also growing quickly on real estate.
What about Greensboro NC, about 30 minutes east of Winston Salem?
It was my favorite place I have ever lived and fits your criteria..
