Yea, it does seem like they are attracting a variety of business's and ethnicities. My wife works for a tech company there and just within walking distance of her office in a 2 block radius, there are now a Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese restaraunts. An Asian supermarket and a Middle Eastern market.

Is there a large population of asians in South Charleston?
CT, it does seem like Western Kanawha and Putnam County Asian population is growing. I've spoken with a restaraunt owner recently, and they moved here from NYC because they said WV was a lot like the area of China they were from, and they loved the country. So i guess maybe some of them are finding something they can relate to from their homeland.
In general, the Chinese seem to make good neighbors so that is a good thing.
I think you will see somewhat of a resurgence of industry in America with developments like this becoming more commonplace. The reason... the folks who are running things these days have messed up so badly our money is worth a fraction of what it once was, and that makes it possible to make things cheaper here than elsewhere when you factor in the transport costs. The "global" economy they preached at us (and are still preaching at us) as being good for us has been devastating for most Americans, but with things as bad as they are we are actually becoming a cheap labor country in that system.
While on a micro level this is good news for South Charleston, as a country with our participation in the global market it is evidence that the super rich have been able to move us further along in the direction of 3rd. world cheap labor status. They can refurbish old factories here and now get Americans to work in them cheaply. And, if the place unionizes and starts making demands, they simply threaten to scale back local production and move it to another cheap labor source. The more factories and off shore options they have, the more they can play one off against another to their advantage.

In the past companies cared about quality and market share, but since the 80s they started focusing on making short term gains on the stock market. If you outsource to China you can sell for the same price but costs go down and your stock increased. Big investment firms, like Goldman Sachs, make a ton of money and so do the upper management in companies. The resulting outsourcing leads to problems, but the money is already made for a few people and they don't care.
That is why income has declined for everyone but the richest 10% of this country, with most going to 1%. Blame scumbags like Mitt Romney who move money around, and sell out the American middle class for a quick buck, instead of adding anything of value.

I agree with you, but you'd also have to impliment tarrifs and deport the illegal aliens to really put most Americans back to work and bring about renewed prosperity for our embattled middle class. There is no way we can work for 80 cents per hour here, and child slave labor is out of the question.
That pair of Nike tennis shoes still costs $100 like it did when they were made here. The difference is now the Nike company gets it made for $10 rather than $25. The quality is not as good, but since the competition has dumped quality in favor of cheap labor they can get away with it.
