My 10 year license is expiring soon and I got a notice in the mail stating:

Your South Carolina driver's license is about to expire. You may be eligible to renew it online or by mail.

A vision screening is required to renew. To complete an online or mail-in renewal, you must have a Certificate of Vision Examination dated within the past 12 months submitted electronically by an SC-licensed eye care professional.

Are they saying you only need to to get an eye exam if you renew online or mail-in? We can still go to the DMV and just take their eye test right?

I tried calling the DMV, but they don't answer.

Thanks.

Yes, you will take an eye test at the DMV. If you can't pass it you get an exam and the doctor submits your exemption directly to DMV.

If you've ever failed an eye exam in SC in the past, you will likely fail it in 2023. I did.

Thanks. I will just go to the DMV in person and do as usual.

Sorry you failed yours. :-( I'll have to go find an old pair of glasses I have around the house and take it with me just to make sure I can see.

Thanks again for responding. You saved me a call to the DMV and then getting forwarded here and there and on hold for hours.

You're welcome. I could pass the eye test in Illinois as long as I wore my glasses. Since I moved to SC I have never been able to pass it even with my glasses on. Makes no sense to me!

I am moving to SC in December. Can I go to an eye doctor instead of taking the eye test at the DMV where I am sure to not pass. I am older . Does that make a difference ?

Assuming you do not yet have an SC license, I'm guessing no because you are not in SC's records. My eye doctor scanned my SC license to submit my exemption.

DMV eye machines are old and not accurate. I have 20 20 and could not read their fuzzy machines.

I tried everything I could think of to focus on the left most box. In my case, my left eye is my weak eye and I still could not see that box using just one eye. In Illinois they would block the right eye; SC doesn't do anything to help you pass the test.

I have worn glasses since 1970.

Ten years ago, as expected. I could not pass the DMV vision test without glasses. Then after a few years I realized I could see/drive better without the glasses, but kept them handy in case I was ever pulled over. When I went to renew I saw an eye doctor first, so I could get new glasses and pass the DMV test, but the eye doctor said my eyes were easily good enough to pass without glasses, so he gave me a form to submit to DMV.

Point is, I thought as I get older my eyes would grow weaker, but in fact I see better now than at any time in the past 50 years. Doesn't make any sense to me, but the eye doctor said "it happens" ... Just glad he was honest and not trying to sell me some glasses.

I went to the DMV a few weeks ago. I had a "A - Restrictive Lens" on the back of my driver's license.

I tried on several of my nearsighted glasses I had at home. But none made me see better than just wearing no glasses. It's as if my eyesight improved over time.

I took the eye test with no glasses on. I passed with flying colors. The lady even asked if I was wearing contacts. I told her I wasn't.

The DMV removed my restriction to wear corrective lens. It had a better ending that I could have imagined.
