Hello, I am planning well in advance for a plane trip and car rental over Labor Day wknd. I have to drive out to the country in Virginia and I can either fly into DCA or BWI. The flight costs and non stop options are good for both airports,, but I'm looking for advice on what airport has easier car rental procedures. In other words, I would not like to take a shuttle to the car rental areas. It's nice to walk across a street to get the car! Also, if you have any advice on the traffic and congestion of these areas, I would appreciate it.

Definitely not BWI, where the rental car facility is away from the terminal and access via a shuttle bus.

And why not IAD? Depends on which part of Virginia you're heading to.

Dulles would have been perfect, but there are no direct flights on the airline that I am using.
Good to know about the shuttle to the car rental area at BWI. I'm trying to avoid that scenario so this information helps. It seems like DCA is the best bet.

DCA has also a shuttle bus to the rental car places. Most airports serving large cities are going to have a separate rental car area. You should have a reservation for the rental car, particularly if your flight is arriving later in the evening.

all three airports have shuttle buses to car rentals. Pick you poison, direct flight or shuttle bus.

Airports in the DMV are like sports teams. Everyone has their favorites. Rental Cars Shuttles aside.... if your destination is in VA then i would lean towards DCA. Depending on the time of day that you land or when you leave traffic to/from DCA the rural part "country" of VA could be challenging. I have never experienced a traffic problem going to/from BWI.. though the pick up/drop off can be somewhat chaotic during the holidays.

DCA has on-site rental cars (except Avis and Budget) that can be reached either by taking a shuttle bus, or a 15 mins walk.

IAD and BWI rental car facilities are both off-site.
