The American Airlines flights to D.C. from Augusta begin January 7, 2020.

This new direct service comes on the heels of the non-stop flights to Dallas-Fort Worth from Augusta.

Today commissioners met with airport executives to talk about recent improvements, and about adding a new airline. There is the possibility of adding more flights. More than 600,000 passengers traveled through this airport last year.

This year Augusta Regional Airport is shooting for even more.

“We are continuing to anticipate growth, year to date we've had about a 9% increase in enplanements and passengers this year so we're continuing to see that," said Herbert Judon, an airport executive director.

Executive Director Herbert Judon says a few improvements have contributed to the growth, including new floors, restrooms, and passenger bridges so people don't have to go outside to get on a plane. Improvements Commissioner Dennis Williams has noticed.

“It's improved in appearance, first of all, it's improved in the services, it has improved in the cleanliness of the building," said Williams.

It all adds up to more passengers and two new direct flights, one to D.C. and the other to Dallas.

“If you make the airport a pleasant and enjoyable place, more people will come and fly out of Augusta," said Williams.

Now they're planning more improvements, including more passenger bridges and extending a taxiway.

“More planes to land and larger aircrafts to land and give us an opportunity to increase our revenue especially during Masters week by parking aircraft," said Williams.

There's even the possibility of another airline and a direct flight to Chicago.

“We're encouraging more airlines to come to the Augusta market, which would give us more flights, which in turn lets more people fly out of Augusta to a destination," said Williams.

Augusta Regional Airport broke a record for the number of passengers using the airport in 2019, increasing its volume almost 10 percent over the previous year, officials said today.

A total of 673,255 passengers came through the airport in 2019, an increase of more than 60,000 over the previous year, a jump of 9.7 percent, the airport said in a news release.

The airport added a direct flight to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in 2019, which opened up connections to a number of other airports. The airport was able to get back a direct flight to Washington, D.C. this month and will add a second flight to Dallas in March. A direct flight from Boston will be available during Masters Week.

Could be something… could be nothing.

This jet flew over the house this evening and was landing at AGS, too low to land anywhere else around us. I matched to color scheme to a low-cost air carrier called Sun Country, which serves North America, Central America and the Caribbean. This obviously isn’t a current airline serving Bush Field… kind of coincidence the timing of the new gates and another terminal expansion in the horizon? I would say a new competitor is LONG past due in this market. I hope so!

It flew from their hub, Minneapolis/St Paul International Airport, and landed in Augusta around 7pm Saturday. Stayed about an hour and left for Atlantic City, then back to Charlotte, then Raleigh. Spent the night there before heading back to MSP yesterday afternoon. They don't service Augusta even as an option through normal bookings on their website, so it could have been a chartered flight or something.

Sun Country does a lot of casino charter flights. From Macon, they fly to Gulfport, MS monthly and have flown to Atlantic City and Laughlin, NV before. Typically, regular gamblers get invites for the flight and free hotels in exchange for leaving their gambling money in the slots! I imagine they run them from Augusta as well.
