This work from Fudan University in China presents a computing platform that can simulate spiking neuronal networks of the whole human brain scale with sMRI-DTI-PET-based biological structure, up to 86 billion neurons and 47.8 trillion synapses. They've used some truly impressive compute: 3503 computing nodes, 14012 GPUs. Spiking neural networks are artificial neural networks that are designed to more closely mimic natural neural networks.
As the paper notes, the adult human brain contains one hundred billion neurons and one thousand trillion synapses. However, there has been other work showing that each brain neuron cannot be simply simulated by one neural net neuron.
