Madaket

The Madaket is a commercial cruise ship that takes passengers on rides in the Humboldt Bay in Samoa, California. It is the final boat of its original seven boat fleet and was originally used to ferry mill workers and their families around the bay. When the Samoa Bridge opened in the early 1970's, there was no longer a need for the ferry, but it stayed in operation as a tourist ship. The boat has been in operation since 1910 and has undergone name changes and a refurbishing in the late 1980's. Today, the boat is one of the most recognizable parts of the Eureka and Samoa waterfront and is the oldest ship in continuous service in the country. It is considered a California Historic Vessel and receives an inspection each year from the U.S. Coast Guard. The boat is made of wood and is 47.5 feet in length. Visitors to the area enjoy 75-minute narrated cruises around the bay. The boat can be rented for special occasions and often hosts birthday, wedding, or field trip private cruises. Regular events include champagne brunch, cocktail, and bird watching cruises. In addition to a cruise on the bay, visitors to the area can also enjoy a tour of the Humboldt Maritime Museum. This seafaring town has a rich history that fascinates visitors and residents alike.
