Carson Mansion

Eureka, California has plenty of entertainment as a college town. One option visitors may want to see is Carson Mansion. The mansion was constructed in 1884-1885 by William Carson. The structure is three stories with 18 rooms including a tower and basement. The house was designed by Newsom Brothers in San Francisco. At the time they were well known architects. The Carson Mansion has become a local landmark due to its beauty and architecture. It has Stick Eastlake characteristics, as well as Queen Anne qualities. The home is a mixture of Gothic, French and Italian influence with ornamental pillars at the entrance. There are also gables, cupolas, turrets, and pillars that help liven up the exterior of the Mansion.

The rooms at Carson Mansion include a foyer, entrance hall, parlor, dining room, bedroom, staff quarters, and billiards room. For those who want a tour these are the main rooms on the docent guided tour. Also part of the tour is walking through the upstairs hall to see the bedrooms. The staircase, windows and ceiling medallions often capture a visitor's attention. The mansion has a new roof in order to protect the structure for many years. Tours are offered throughout the week, but reservations may be necessary.
