The city of Eldon and Wapello County invite you to visit the American Gothic House Center. In 1930 Grant Wood visited Eldon, Iowa and gained inspiration for the painting "American Gothic". The house in the painting is in Eldon, Iowa. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and will be 125 years old in 2007. There is an American Gothic Parodies Exhibit opening in June 2007. Eldon also has three other buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. The Eldon Carnegie Public Library, McHaffey Opera House and the Hollenbeck Hall at the Wapello County Fairgrounds.
