Description: If not for this hotel building, the state capital may have moved elsewhere. Opened in 1871 to keep Madison as the star on the map when others suggested moving it to Milwaukee, this structure has undergone its share of upgrades. Located right on the Capitol Square, walking distance to State Street and the University of Wisconsin, this 215-room hotel is a safe but ordinary bet, and its status as the only hotel on the square is its justification for the steep pricing. Suites and standard rooms come with king, queen, or twin beds, as well as coffeemakers, irons and ironing boards, blackout curtains, alarm clocks, phones, and large TVs. Suites add a minifridge and a seating area. Extra occupants incur a nominal charge. Continental breakfast is lacking but a restaurant and bar serve food all day. Service is solid but the interiors are just ordinary. Shuttles connect to the airport and, based on availability and sign up, to the university campus. Free wireless Internet is available throughout the building and DSL can be had in the rooms. Guests without laptops can use the small computer room. Valet parking is included for one car for each room. A swimming pool, whirlpool, and small fitness room are on-site. Several rooms are wheelchair accessible, but pets are not allowed. Guests on the 9th floor need to take the elevator to the 8th floor and then switch to another as the 9th floor was previously a more exclusive arrangement. Ask for rooms with a Capitol view.
