Description: This historic plantation is located 30 miles west of Williamsburg, but provides a unique lodging experience. The mansion, with its double spiral staircase and 10 fireplaces, is a National Historic Landmark. A gristmill on the property dates from 1725.There is a ghost. On one bedroom window upstairs, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Rowland wrote her name with a diamond. Legend has it that she died of a broken heart waiting in vain for her lover to return from the Civil War. Don’t let her intimidate you. There’s a good night’s sleep in any one of the seven bedrooms or Prissy’s Quarters, a cabin behind the main house. Gone with the Wind fans will enjoy the third floor, with its sitting and common area rooms, called Scarlett’s Room and Melanie’s Room. All rooms have king- or queen-size canopy beds.On the grounds you will find formal gardens and a swimming pool. Breakfast is candlelit, and it may include fresh fruit, orange juice, crepes, quiche, croissants filled with fruit and cheese—or sometimes a country breakfast of Smithfield ham biscuits and fried apples. Special features available upon request include Victorian teas and tours, including a haunted tour. If Christmas is your favorite season, you will enjoy the 18 decorated Christmas trees at Edgewood.Smoking is allowed outside and in the kitchen only.Edgewood Plantation is about halfway between Williamsburg and Richmond, along scenic Route 5.
