Description: Inova Fair Oaks Hospital was one of two hospitals built in Fairfax County in the 1980s—in this case, 1987. The other was Reston Hospital Center (see subsequent entry). It offers such design features as bed-mounted telephones and nurse call buttons, wall-to-wall carpeting in patients’ rooms, private televisions with in-room movies, solariums, gourmet meals, and rooms with deluxe amenities. The 160-bed, 1,200-employee facility is part of the Inova Health System that includes Alexandria, Mount Vernon, and Fairfax Hospitals. A western Fairfax location—just off U.S. 50 at I–66—makes Fair Oaks Hospital convenient to many county residents beyond its core service area of Chantilly, Reston, and Fairfax. More than 1,000 physicians covering dozens of specialties have privileges at Fair Oaks, which can handle emergency, medical, surgical, critical-care, cardiac, orthopedic, obstetric, and pediatric patients. The 24-hour emergency department offers a helipad located just outside the doors. Two additions focus on the care and treatment of young patients: a maternal and infant health center (which opened in 1988), emphasizing a family-centered approach to the birth process, and a children’s unit (1990) specially equipped for infants and children through age 18. In-house pediatricians are available 24 hours a day. Inova Fair Oaks also offers comprehensive sleep evaluations for patients suffering from sleep apnea, insomnia, chronic fatigue, and other problems related to sleep disorders.
