Description: After three years of working to bring a WNBA team to San Antonio, the dream finally came true in November 2002 when the WNBA announced that they had granted a WNBA franchise to Spurs Sports and Entertainment. Soon after, SS&E assumed ownership of the Utah Starzz, one of the WNBA’s original 8 franchises that began play in 1997. The name changed to the Silver Stars, and the Fox (a silver fox wearing a Stars uniform) became the team’s mascot.San Antonio’s new team began its inaugural season with a training camp delayed by discord between players and league officials over the collective-bargaining agreement. After the dust settled, however, the Silver Stars kicked off the regular season with a win over the Los Angeles Sparks in front of a crowd of almost 15,600 fans. Ticket prices range from $10 to $125, and youngsters under 24 months old sitting in laps can get in free of charge. Tickets are available through the same sources as the San Antonio Spurs.
