Description: Winner of numerous National Magazine Awards, Texas Monthly is the state’s showcase magazine. And it’s published in Austin. This full-color glossy magazine offers lengthy news and feature articles and spicy true-crime stories of interest to its affluent, well-educated readers. It also provides frequently updated reviews of selected restaurants in Texas’s major cities. Its regular column “Around the State” is a city-by-city guide to choice entertainment. The annual Bum Steer Awards, published in the Jan issue, take an irreverent look at the people and situations in Texas that the editors believe have been particularly weird or foolish over the past year; it’s perennially one of the magazine’s best-selling issues. The Best and Worst Legislators is another popular cover feature that comes out every other July (as the Texas Legislature meets biennially). Look also for the annual Top Twenty issue, which lists the magazine’s choice of the 20 most influential Texans of the year. Publisher Mike Levy, who started the magazine when he was 26 years old, has found a formula that satisfies the majority of Texas Monthly’s readers.
