Description: Plan to spend some time at the Dahl. The Ruth Brennan Gallery has six to eight exhibitions every year, each with an opening reception. Themes vary widely, from Mexican folk art and impressionistic oils to photography and Black Hills landscapes. The gallery focuses on education—and this includes regional, national, and international work, and traveling exhibits. The center has a 170-seat theater and offices and serves as the hub for several arts organizations in Rapid City. It’s open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tues through Sat and 1 to 5 p.m. Sun.Adjoining the Ruth Brennan Gallery is the Central Gallery, which focuses on community work and involvement. Artwork, often from local schools or organizations, is displayed in three- to six-week-long shows. Art classes are offered for both children and adults, and the subject matter varies. Local artists regularly give talks and presentations. The Cyclorama mural by Bernard Thomas is in a room adjacent to the Central Gallery. It is a representation of 200 years of American history from an economic perspective (it was commissioned by the Dahl’s founder, a banker). Ask a staff member to turn on the taped narrative and lighting system to accompany your look at the mural. You’ll find South Dakota Public Radio at 89.3 FM in Rapid City; 88.1 FM in Belle Fourche and Hot Springs; 99.1 FM in Spearfish; and 91.9 FM in Lead.
