Description: The University of New Mexico was founded in 1889 and has long been a key influence on city life, establishing Albuquerque as a center for academics, artists, and thinkers. The faculty includes a Nobel laureate, 2 MacArthur Fellows, and 35 Fulbright Scholars. The main 600-acre campus in Albuquerque enrolled over 25,000 students for the 2008–09 academic year. Statewide, over 32,000 students were enrolled, including those at the satellite campuses. Preliminary enrollment reports for fall 2009 suggest 2009–10 will be a record-breaking year. In 2008 U.S. News & World Report cited UNM’s graduate programs in law, engineering, and medicine as among the best in the nation. The university also has major schools of education and business. Forbes’s 2009 America’s Best Colleges report ranked the University of New Mexico at number 239 among the nation’s top 600 colleges and number 38 among public colleges. Annual giving to the university in 2008 was over $85.5 million.At UNM’s main campus students may enroll in over 215 degree and certificate programs. These include 94 baccalaureate-, 72 master’s-, and 38 doctoral-level degree programs. UNM is the state’s major research university and enrolls 80 percent of the state’s PhD candidates.The UNM Health Sciences Center, established in 1994, is the largest integrated health-care research, education, and treatment organization in the state, with programs including the School of Medicine, College of Nursing, and College of Pharmacy. U.S. News & World Report ranked the School of Medicine in the top 25 medical schools in the nation.Students at UNM enjoy a beautiful campus, with historic buildings set amid mature landscaping resplendent with over 300 tree species and a duck pond, right in the heart of the city. Those living in residence halls will benefit from a $4.8 million facelift in 2009 to renovate student housing. The campus is dotted with the university’s art collection of over 200 sculptures, murals, and paintings. Famed architect John Gaw Meem designed 30 of the UNM buildings, and his oft-praised Spanish Pueblo Revival style indelibly stamped the campus with a character unique to UNM. Meem’s Zimmerman Library was cited as the New Mexico building of the 20th century by the American Institute of Architects; Scholes Hall and the Alumni Memorial Chapel are also standout architectural examples.Students have a pick of over 400 student organizations to join, from academic and cultural groups to fraternities and sororities. UNM Athletics offers 21 sports, and the university Lobos teams enjoy a loyal and passionate following of red-and-silver-hued fans from the greater community. Sports facilities include the renowned Pit arena, University Stadium, and Isotopes Park.UNM’s on-campus arts venues are some of the finest in the state and are central to the entire city of Albuquerque’s arts life, as well as being popular attractions for tourists. In the Center for the Arts, the venerable 2,044-seat performance venue Popejoy Hall is home to the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. The smaller Rodey Theatre, Keller Hall, and Theatre X present smaller music, drama, and dance productions. The UNM Art Museum houses New Mexico’s largest fine art collection and also the Jonson Gallery. Other free museums are the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, the UNM Meteorite Museum, the Geology Museum, and the Tamarind Institute’s fine art lithography gallery.
