Description: The simple charm of the Summer White House speaks volumes about the man who chose to be buried in his hometown rather than beside a towering monument in Washington, D.C. Bess Truman’s grandparents built the Victorian home in 1885; she grew up here, and she and Harry lived here when they weren’t in Washington, D.C. The furnishings are just as they were when she died in 1982, right down to the dishcloth by the sink and Harry’s hat by the door. The house is open year-round and tours are conducted every 15 minutes. We suggest you arrive early because tickets are issued starting at 8:30 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets are available at the Truman Home Ticket and Information Center at Truman Road and Main Street, where you can watch a short slide show about the Trumans. Admission is $4, free for those under 17. Guided walking tours of the neighborhood leave from the center daily from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day.
