Description: After graduation from high school, Portland students have lots of options for continuing their education. The University of Southern Maine, part of the statewide University of Maine system, is located in the heart of Portland and has satellite campuses in Gorham and Lewiston. Located just across the street from USM’s Portland campus is the state’s only law school, one of the smallest in the nation. The University of Maine School of Law is an administrative unit of USM. Portland also has a well-regarded art school, the Maine College of Art, located right in Portland’s downtown arts district. And students who are looking for vocational training need go no farther than across the bridge to the Southern Maine Community College in South Portland. Located right on Casco Bay, SMCC boasts probably one of the most scenic community college campuses in the country. There’s also Andover College, which offers associate’s degrees in a variety of subjects, including business. Students willing to commute a short distance have access to many excellent centers of higher education, including the private Bowdoin College, just a 30-minute drive away in the town of Brunswick. Bates College in Lewiston is about 40 minutes away. The University of New England in Biddeford, headquartered about a half-hour away and with a campus in Portland, is the home of Maine’s only medical school—a college of osteopathic medicine—and a brand new college of pharmacy.
